The Traditions In Relationships

I have been with my partner for 2 years. We are in our 3rd year now and the only reason we are still together is because we pray together.

Yesterday we went out to our property to take a load of stuff out there. It had snowed and the snow had thawed. Our property is at the end of a long dirt road. The neighbors grade the road up to a point at the top of our hill. We still need to add roadbase and put in a real road into the property.

As we peaked the hill, the truck began to slide down the other side. 4-wheel drive doesn’t matter much when the tires are caked with mud. We are both hot-tempered individuals. When we are surprised by something, we both go directly to fear and anger, usually at each other. This time however, I saw that coming so I just started praying. I got really quiet. He turned to me and said, “We might be here all night until the ground freezes.” I said, “Let’s pray”. We prayed together outloud. I asked God for His magic carpet to appear before us to give us traction to get out if it was His will to do so.

We paused. We decided to unload the truck and carry the stuff to the fence line by hand. It took about 45 minutes. I always like to give God time to make the prayers happen, if they are going to happen. At that point, we decided to try again – even though the ground was warmer and more melty than when we first started to slide.

We got out! It was God, for sure! Both of us were completely blown away by it and are closer together than before. It works! It really does!

Do we have a 1st Tradition? I am not really sure -because we are both so self-centered, but our 2nd Tradition makes up for it in spades.

I have been sober following all the principles of AA as of 2/18/91. I am watching the deterioration of AA and I am determined to make available to others, how I have found to keep the principles alive.
